The Unbearable Lightness of Being Me

A Debate?

Last night, I (among many other mexicans i hope), whitnessed the first 'debate' of the official presidential candidates. Well, at least the 'debate' of 4 out of 5 of the official presidential candidates, cause the 5th decided not to participate to avoid 'possible attacks' from his contendants. What a hero eh?

Anyways, im not even going to go deeper into that... at least not in this post.

The thing is i dont understand why on earth they decided to call it a Debate. I was kinda expecting something different, something like, you know... a debate!, and all i got was 2 hours where each candidate presented their proposals about different topics, even having a 'response time' which was used to complement their first presentation about the topic and obviously (and i say obviously because after a couple of months of campaign, we know what to expect when it comes to this) to send personal missiles to eachother.

And it gets even more ridiculous... the candidates prepared something beforehand, they memorized their speech (best case scenario, cause one of them was even reading!) and they just couldnt care less about what the other candidates talked about.. they had a script to follow! Even if the 'missile' that they were supposed to shoot during their speech, wouldnt make sense at all due to the rival's presentation.. they had a script to follow!

As far as i know, a debate is a discussion a liiiiitle bit different. And after all, im not that far from the definition of the word..

Debate
v.intr.
1. To engage in argument by discussing opposing points.
2. To engage in a formal discussion or argument.
v.tr.
1. To dispute or argue about.
2. To discuss or argue (a question, for example) formally.
n.
1. A discussion involving opposing points; an argument.
2. A formal contest of argumentation in which two
opposing teams defend and attack a given proposition.

I thought i was finally going to hear more details about the candidates' beautiful and well-intentioned proposals.

I thought it was time to hear about the HOW and not about the WHAT.

I thought they would show us WHY they have won the place that they have right now.

I guess i was an optimist.

But well, this televised 'show' didnt change my vote at all. Au contraire, im much more certain about what i want to choose for my country next July.

The evidence

I have finally uploaded the pictures of our roadtrip...

As i had mentioned before, most of the shots come from Jonas and his camera, but at least i get to have my (sort of) own selection.

In other news, my high-tech boyfriend made a very cool thing with Google Earth, which proves those late nights spent coding (and doing other techie stuff that i dont fully understand) truly have a point in life!

If you are fancy enough, you cant miss his post! :)

Guess who's back?

Not as excited and cheerful as when i left, i must admit.. but Im back!

They say time flies when youre having fun, and im telling you, these 2 weeks flew like a pissed off concorde! Our little roadtrip KICKED ASS! Several big fat asses to be more exact.

- The travel companion: Nothing more and nothing less than my dear boyfriend Jonas himself :D After eternal 3 months, we finally meet again to spend 2 weeks driving around together! I loved having the chance to make this trip with him, i loved driving while he was sitting next to me (looking a bit scared at times), i loved being the DJ or the 'pleasant passenger' when it was his turn to drive, i loved spending enough time together to get to know more about eachother and even argue over something, i loved laughing, eating, drinking, sleeping and visiting wonderful places with him. Please bear with my mushiness for today, after all, i just said bye to Jonas last night.. but well, before i get mushier..

- The route: I think we had a sweet balance between a previously defined route and an expect the unexpected attitude in case of taking the wrong road, drinking bad water and such.. In the end, it was something like this:

Puebla --> Minatitlan --> Campeche --> Uxmal --> Merida --> Chichen Itza --> Cenote Dzitnup --> Playa del Carmen --> Cozumel --> Tulum --> Chetumal --> Palenque --> Misol Ha --> Agua Azul --> San Cristobal de las Casas --> Chamula --> Veracruz --> Mexico City

Unfortunately, we didnt have time to make it to Oaxaca so maybe we know where to start next time!

- The vehicle: You really remember to appreciate cold days (at least for a while) after being put into a car for several hours WITHOUT air conditioning at around +30ºC. Not that we had a thermometer, but as Jonas put it.. when youre driving at around 120, 140 or even 160 km/hr and having the windows down doesnt help all that much.. then its really warm outside no?

The good thing is the car behaved properly all the time, even when (smart as i am) i drove on top of some sort of sidewalk and a couple of guys had to help us lift the car to get it down.

- The road: We drove a lot... around 3,900 kms of highways, freeways and uglyways. To be on the safe side we only drove during the day and tried to keep ourselves amused drinking water and stopping to the toilet, jumping to the roof of the car with crazy speedbumps, trying to figure out which road were we actually on, as the signs could say two different things, etc. Jonas and I kept switching seats along the way and i think i personally broke my speed record when i hit 180 km/hr!

- The soundtrack: It was a bit challenging to listen to music when having our windows rolled down.. it became so damn noisy! But we still kept playing music almost all the time: Kashmir, Kent, Molotov, Manu Chao, Robbie Williams, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, among others of course, are definitely part of the official soundtrack of this trip.

- The food: I can only say that the effect of those months i spent at the gym, sweating my ass off at spinning and all that jazz, has been neutralized (to say it nicely) after these 2 weeks. When you have buffet breakfast included in your hotel, you travel around the coast eating as much seafood as you can and you drink beer with almost every meal, theres no escape... you gain weight! My official favorite dish: Camarones al Coco (Coconut Shrimp) from Campeche! Not to forget: Meat banquet at Miura and Crepes at Namandi (San Cristobal), Seafood feast at Blue Lobster (Playa del Carmen), etc..

- The tourists: Thank you very much to all americans (and tourists in general) who decided to invade Mexico exactly from the 4th to the 18th of April. I couldnt be more thankful and delighted. You are welcome to come back next year, and the next next one too. Mi casa es tu casa, remember?

- The pictures: I think im definitely starting a tradition when it comes to pictures with Jonas: I rely on his photographer skills and his fancy camera. I get to use it to shoot my classic self-portraits and thats (more or less) it. Mine is only turned on when i get sudden rushes of guiltiness for not taking my own pictures, but its soon turned off again as soon as i compare the resolution quality.

Okay, to cut the crap, ill download my few pics and wait for Jonas' ones to have my own album on Flickr at least :)

- The plague: Bees, bees, bees and F B bees again. One bee in particular, hello to your mom from me! And other thing, can someone explain to me why dont they sell Negra Modelo at bars and restaurants in almost all those states? They should know better!

- On a health note: Have you ever heard about Moctezuma's Revenge? Well, if youre planning to visit Mexico or any other developing country, you should at least read a bit about this lovely curse. Anyways, thing is Moctezuma definitely got his share of revenge on Jonas (thank you very much) in San Cristobal. This implied he had to stay in bed for 2 days dieting with pills and soups. As for me, I played a lame version of a nurse (and im afraid i was not exactly the nurse that a lot of guys have in their heads when they picture one, damn!) and stood by him mainly providing pills, water & soups, watching tv and catching up with my past due sleeping bills. Luckily he started feeling better after that, and we were able to continue our trip back home.

While im at this topic, i gotta say that my nose went crazy for at least the first half of the trip. First i thought i was getting a cold, after a couple of days it became kinda clear that i had an allergy (couldnt determine to what though), and when i thought my nose couldnt be acting worse... it started bleeding randomly! It was especially nice to wake up on a bloody (literal) pillow in Merida or start bleeding while having a silly argument on the hippest street in Playa del Carmen!

- The end.

Hitting the Road!

April 4th is finally here and that means I will be offline for the next 2 weeks, but hey, i have an extremely good reason for it!

My beloved Jonas and I will take that forementioned roadtrip through Southeast Mexico! Woohoo!!! :)

In case you are curious about our route:

Quick facts:

- Distance to the farthest place: 1,700 km
- States to drive through: Puebla, Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Chiapas & Oaxaca
- Average temperature in those latitudes: 30ºC
- Estimated driving hours: 50-60 (min)

The official kick off is tonight, after I pick up Jonas from the airport! Lalalala..

I dont think i will be doing any 'on-site' reporting, but if opportunity arises.. ill grab it!

Signing off...

Its been 14 years...

It feels quite adequate to inaugurate April with this post.. after all, everything started on a rainy April... April 1st, 1992 to be more exact.

I was 14 and i had 'discovered' Guns N' Roses just a few years back. As many other girls of course, i was crazy about Axl Rose so i used to buy all sorts of rock magazines just to be able to have one more poster, one more picture, one more crazy note about Axl's extravaganzas...

My room was an ode to these guys (and some others, but mainly GNR), i had posters of them all over my walls, i had official and unofficial photos that i bought in a 'specialized' store downtown, i had all their albums (ok, they didnt have the largest collection but still), and even my parents learned to stand like them.

When our loving relationship was kinda at its peak.. it was announced that Guns N' Roses would play in Mexico City for the first time on: April 1st, 1992.

Do i need to describe the happiness that i felt?

(Good i dont, cause i dont think i could - you go speechless with this kind of announcements!)

It would be my very first rock concert and what a bliiiiiiss, to be able to start my 'career' with my favorite band!!!

Its been 14 years (ahh theres a GNR song called like that... 14 years!) since i attended that first concert, since i couldnt believe it was really Axl Rose himself who was running around on stage, since i heard all my favorite GNR hits played live, since i almost got to meet the band backstage (no kidding!)... sigh.. time flies!

And well, im a freak who enjoy making (some kind of) lists.. and with this anniversary, i just had to publish the list of bands that Ive seen live in these 14 years:
